In the quiet town of Christiansburg, Virginia, a tragedy unfolded that left the community in shock. On a Monday afternoon, May 4, 2015, the life of 59-year-old Audrey Virginia Long was cut short in what police would later describe as an apparent murder-suicide.
The events of that day began to come to light around 1:15 p.m. when a chilling 911 call was made by a man who reported a homicide at his residence in the 1100 block of Tranquility Via.
When Christiansburg Police officers arrived at the home, their attempts to make contact with anyone inside were met with silence. Treating the situation as a possible barricaded subject, a perimeter was established.
A rescue team was assembled to make entry into the home to assess the situation and provide medical aid if needed. Shortly before 1:45 p.m., officers entered the residence and made a grim discovery. Inside, they found Audrey Virginia Long and 64-year-old Walter Macleatus Mills, both deceased. It is believed that Mills was the individual who made the 911 call.
The proximity of the residence to Christiansburg High School prompted a brief lockdown of the school as a precautionary measure while the situation was being investigated. The investigation into the deaths of Audrey Long and Walter Mills concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide, with no outstanding suspects.
