In the early morning hours of October 14, 2016, Ronald A. 'Ron' Holder, a 48-year-old White / Caucasian male, arrived at his place of work, the Dollar General store on Walmsley Boulevard in Richmond, Virginia, for what would be his final day. As the store manager, he entered the building to prepare the overnight cash deposits, placing them into a gray and black soft-sided cooler.
Approximately 15 minutes later, he exited the store and got into his vehicle, ready to make the bank run.
Tragically, as he prepared to leave, an unknown individual was lurking in the parking lot. This person fired multiple gunshots at Holder, fatally wounding him. The assailant initially fled the scene but then returned to open the door of Holder's vehicle. By the time Richmond Police officers responded to a call of an injured person around 8:05 a.m., they discovered Holder deceased in the driver's seat. The gray and black cooler containing the cash deposits was missing. His death marked the 50th homicide in the city that year.
The investigation into Holder's murder involved both the Richmond Police Department and the FBI Richmond Division's Central Virginia Violent Crimes Task Force. Despite their efforts, a motive has not been officially released, and no description of a suspect has been made public. A reward of up to $10,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence. To date, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made, leaving a community and a family still searching for answers and justice for a man remembered by customers and colleagues for his pleasant demeanor and dedication.
