In the small community of Meadowview, Virginia, the life of 23-year-old Ashleigh Nicole Langbein was tragically cut short on Monday, January 9, 2017. A recent graduate of Emory & Henry College, Ashleigh was a vibrant young woman who had experienced a worldly upbringing, living in various places across the globe due to her father's military career. Her journey, however, came to a violent end in an apartment on Hillman Highway.
In the pre-dawn hours, just before 4 a.m., authorities were
called to the residence where they discovered Ashleigh's body. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal shot to the head. The initial shock of her death rippled through the close-knit college community and beyond, leaving friends and family to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss. Ashleigh was remembered as an amazing woman, a friend, and a guide by those who knew her.
The investigation into her death quickly led to a suspect. James Joseph Canter III, a 25-year-old acquaintance of Ashleigh's, was identified and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Canter was held without bond at the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon as authorities continued to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
While an arrest was made, the motive behind the tragic event remained under investigation.
