Chazerey D. Moseley, a 28-year-old Black man from Chesterfield County, Virginia, was found dead on October 27, 2017, slumped behind the wheel of his own car on Old Zion Hill Road. The morning started with what sounded like a routine complaint: a vehicle sitting wrong, partly in the way, enough for a neighbor to call it in as “improperly parked.” An officer ran the registration, learned the owner lived close by, and went to the nearby home to ask that someone come move it. When family members stepped outside to do that, they instead discovered Moseley inside the car and called police back in a rush.
Investigators determined he had been shot to death. In the days that followed, grief and fear braided together in the neighborhood. Reports described him as having been shot about a dozen times, and even the vigil held in his memory carried an uneasy edge, with violence erupting nearby as people tried to mourn. Early on, police had not publicly laid out a motive or named a suspect, leaving the story to hang in that terrible uncertainty families know too well: the last moments were gone, and the why was missing.
Months later, the case moved from unanswered questions toward a courtroom path. In March 2018, a Chesterfield County grand jury indicted Christopher W. Bryant of Richmond, and he was served the indictments while already incarcerated at Riverside Regional Jail. The indictment included first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Additional reporting at the time said Bryant was held without bond and also faced a robbery charge along with two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, along with the firearm-by-felon charge. Public reporting available online does not consistently document the final courtroom outcome in the same level of detail as the charging stage, but the suspect identified in coverage of the homicide investigation and indictment was Bryant.
