In the small town of Narrows, Virginia, the life of 20-year-old Dakota Ryan Bailey was cut tragically short on January 3, 2018. The young man was fatally shot during an incident that unfolded as an attempted armed robbery at a home located in the 300 block of Stockpen Mountain Road in Giles County. The events of that night would lead to a wide-ranging investigation by the Giles County Sheriff's Office and result in the arrests of seven individuals.
The investigation revealed a complex
situation that began on Stockpen Mountain and concluded in front of the First National Bank of Peterstown in Narrows. In the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Bailey, another man, 47-year-old David Joseph Cecil of Narrows, was also shot and seriously injured, requiring him to be flown to a hospital for treatment. Another individual, Tyler Lee Foster, 18, also from Narrows, was found to have sustained minor injuries related to the incident upon his arrest.
Authorities moved swiftly to identify and apprehend those they believed to be involved. Warrants were issued for several individuals on various charges. David Joseph Cecil, Tyler Lee Foster, 18-year-old Darren Justin Cecil of Narrows, and 19-year-old Blade Donovan Powers of Wytheville were each charged with breaking and entering and attempted armed robbery. Additionally, two women, 18-year-old Megan Kaylee Shaver of Lynchburg and 20-year-old Lindsey Paige Robertson of Pearisburg, faced charges of conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
The resident of the home where the attempted robbery occurred, Anthony Dewaye Gautier, 31, of Narrows, was also arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. With the exception of David Cecil, who remained hospitalized due to his injuries, all the named suspects were taken into custody by law enforcement. The Giles County Sheriff's Office assured the public that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to community safety following the arrests.
