In the fall of 2019, the life of 30-year-old Travis Wayne Pannell, a Black male from Halifax, Virginia, was tragically cut short. His story unfolded from a missing person's case into a homicide investigation that would ultimately lead to the conviction of two men. Pannell was last seen alive on October 4, 2019, at a party in Roanoke. After getting into a car, he vanished, prompting a report of his disappearance on October 8.
The search for Pannell came to a grim conclusion on October 24,
2019, when his body was discovered on the side of Jubal Early Highway in a rural area of Franklin County, near Hardy. An autopsy by the medical examiner would later confirm that he had died from gunshot wounds. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Roanoke Police Department, immediately began investigating his death as a homicide.
The investigation into Pannell's murder led to the arrests of two individuals. Patrick Antoine Davis and Mario Rayshawn Day were taken into custody in connection with the crime. In the ensuing legal proceedings, both men pleaded guilty to their roles in Travis Pannell's death. Davis entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and received a 40-year prison sentence, with 22 years suspended, leaving him to serve 18 years.
Mario Rayshawn Day pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder for his part in the events leading to Pannell's death. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with one and a half years suspended, resulting in an eight-and-a-half-year prison term. The resolution of the court cases brought a measure of justice for Pannell's family, who had endured weeks of uncertainty followed by the devastating loss of their loved one.
