In the quiet community of Hardy, Virginia, the life of 54-year-old Rodney Wilfred Brown came to a sudden and violent end on Saturday, November 9, 2019. A family member discovered him deceased at his residence on Woodthrush Circle just before noon, setting in motion a complex and widely publicized investigation. Brown, who had worked for three decades at Carvins Cove Boat Landing, was shot and killed, and the initial person of interest was soon identified, leading to a manhunt that drew
significant media attention.
The focus of the investigation quickly centered on Michael Alexander Brown, the son of Rodney Brown's live-in girlfriend. Authorities named Michael Brown as a suspect and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. At the time, he was an active-duty Marine who had deserted his post as a combat engineer at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in October 2019. Investigators revealed that he was known to live in the woods and frequent national parks, and was believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle.
An arrest warrant was issued for Michael Brown, initially for second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In July 2020, a grand jury indicted Michael Brown on multiple felonies, upgrading the murder charge to first-degree murder.
