In the quiet town of Waynesboro, Virginia, the life of 19-year-old Yesenia Katelyn-Leigh Ruiz was tragically cut short on the morning of November 23, 2019. Known affectionately as 'China' to her friends and family, the young Hispanic woman was a beloved figure in her community. A graduate of Waynesboro High School, she had been active in cheerleading, softball, and volleyball.
At the time of her death, she was working as a personal care assistant, a job where she was cherished by those she cared for.
On that fateful Saturday morning, emergency services were called to the family's home on Ridgewood Road. There, they discovered Yesenia had been fatally shot with a rifle. The circumstances that unfolded painted a picture of a devastating accident. Her older brother, 21-year-old Cesar Felipe Ruiz, a soldier stationed at Fort Eustis, was handling the firearm when it unintentionally discharged, striking and killing his sister.
The incident led to the arrest of Cesar Felipe Ruiz. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter, unlawfully discharging a firearm within an occupied building, and reckless handling of a firearm. In the days following the tragedy, he appeared in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and was subsequently released on a five thousand dollar bond. The community rallied around the grieving Ruiz family, offering support and raising funds to help with funeral expenses during an unimaginably difficult time. Yesenia was remembered for her kind heart, her love for her family, and her ability to bring laughter to others.
