On a tragic day in February 2020, the lives of two young people were cut short. Eighteen-year-old Ayanna Munne Maertens Griffin and her twenty-one-year-old boyfriend, Ntombo Joel Bianda, were found deceased on the morning of February 8th. Their bodies were discovered in the median of U.S. Route 58 in a rural area of Halifax County, Virginia, near the town of Turbeville.
Both had been fatally shot.
Ayanna, who was from Germantown, Maryland, and Joel, from Alexandria, Virginia, had both graduated from Northwest High School. The young couple was reportedly on their way to Danville, Virginia, to visit a friend. Their families were left devastated and searching for answers as to why they were in that remote location and who could have committed such a violent act. The discovery of their bodies next to a silver Nissan Maxima launched a double homicide investigation by the Virginia State Police.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect. Mohamed Aly, an 18-year-old from Alexandria, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. It was revealed that Aly had been in the car with Ayanna and Joel. He confessed to shooting both of them from the back seat of the vehicle. After the shooting, he left their bodies on the side of the highway.
In December 2020, Mohamed Aly pleaded guilty to the murders. Despite his confession and an apology in court, a clear motive for the killings was never established, leaving the victims' families with lingering questions. Aly was sentenced to four life sentences for his crimes. The resolution of the court case brought a small measure of closure to the grieving families, though the pain of losing Ayanna and Joel remains.
