In the quiet town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, the life of 33-year-old Alfonso Connett Wilson was tragically cut short on Sunday, August 23, 2020. The evening was shattered by an altercation that escalated to gunfire, leaving Wilson, a male, fatally wounded. The incident, which unfolded around 8:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Douglas Avenue, prompted a swift response from the Colonial Beach Police Department.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered Wilson suffering from a
gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation pointed to a dispute that had turned violent, culminating in the senseless loss of a man known affectionately to his friends and family.
In the days that followed, the Colonial Beach Police, with the assistance of the Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office, launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect, Marktwan D. Johnson, a 28-year-old resident of Colonial Beach. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Johnson, who was also facing a charge for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The search for Johnson came to an end on the afternoon of August 25, 2020. He was located at a residence on Washington Avenue and taken into custody without incident by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. Following his arrest, Johnson was transported to the Northern Neck Regional Jail, where he was held without bond. The case then moved to the Westmoreland County courts for prosecution, with Johnson scheduled for an initial appearance in Westmoreland County General District Court.
