On a summer evening in Bedford, Virginia, the life of 36-year-old Jessica Ryan Moore, a White female, was tragically cut short. On July 3, 2021, while driving her vehicle on Burks Hill Road, she suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency services were called to the scene around 10 p.m., and Moore was rushed to Bedford Memorial Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The initial investigation by the Bedford Police Department quickly identified a person of interest who was in the car with Moore at the time of the shooting.
The passenger in the vehicle was identified as Daniel Joseph Norwood, a 34-year-old man from Lynchburg and Moore's boyfriend. The investigation revealed that Norwood, who was intoxicated at the time, was in the passenger seat and attempting to unload a firearm when it discharged, striking Moore. Tragically, two children were also in the vehicle when the incident occurred, one belonging to Moore and the other to Norwood. Following the investigation, Norwood was arrested and faced charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless handling of a firearm.
The case against Daniel Norwood proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a sentencing hearing in July 2022. In a poignant turn of events, Jessica Moore's family requested that the Bedford judge show grace in his sentencing of Norwood. During the hearing, a remorseful Norwood read a statement, expressing his deep regret for the accident and the loss of the woman he loved. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison.
However, the majority of the sentence was suspended, with Norwood serving eight months. His release came with stringent conditions, including eight years of good behavior, the first four of which are to be under supervised probation. Furthermore, he is prohibited from owning or using a firearm and is required to comply with any recommended drug testing and mental health treatment. The tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of mishandling firearms, leaving a family and community to mourn the loss of a beloved mother, daughter, and sister.
