On a tragic Tuesday afternoon, February 1, 2022, the Bridgewater College community was irrevocably shattered by a senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of two of its dedicated officers. Campus Safety Officer Vashon A. 'J.J.' Jefferson, a 48-year-old male, and his close friend and colleague, Campus Police Officer John Painter, were shot and killed while responding to a report of a suspicious individual on campus.
The two officers, known to many as the 'dynamic duo,' were beloved figures on campus, and Painter had served as the best man at Jefferson's recent wedding.
The incident began to unfold around 1:20 p.m. when a call was made about a man who was in a location he should not have been near Memorial Hall. Officers Jefferson and Painter responded to the call and, after a brief interaction with the man, he opened fire, fatally wounding both of them. Jefferson, as a campus safety officer, was not armed. The gunman then fled the scene on foot, sparking a manhunt that put the college and surrounding areas on lockdown.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Alexander Wyatt Campbell of Ashland, Virginia, was apprehended a short time later. He had waded through a river and was taken into custody on an island. At the time of his arrest, Campbell was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound; it was unclear if the wound was self-inflicted or sustained during an exchange with Officer Painter. Multiple firearms associated with Campbell were recovered.
Following his capture, Alexander Wyatt Campbell was charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of first-degree murder, and a weapons charge. He was ordered to be held without bond. The investigation revealed that Campbell was a former student at Bridgewater College. The profound loss of J.J. Jefferson, a Marine Corps veteran with a distinguished career in law enforcement, and John Painter left a deep wound in the hearts of their families, friends, and the entire Bridgewater College community, who remembered them as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.
