In the quiet town of Gretna, Virginia, the life of 51-year-old Charles Van Hooker was brought to a tragic and violent end on February 11, 2022. Investigators discovered his body inside a residence on Boxwood Road, and what was initially deemed a 'suspicious' death was quickly reclassified as a homicide. An autopsy confirmed that Van Hooker had been shot to death.
As the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office delved into the investigation, details began to emerge about the circumstances surrounding the murder. The case was linked to a drug dispute, shattering the peace of the rural community. The investigation led to the identification of two suspects who would eventually be brought to justice for their roles in Van Hooker's death.
One of the men, Deshawn Hamlett of Altavista, was convicted of first-degree murder for his involvement in the crime. He received a life sentence for his part in the fatal shooting. The second individual, Daniel Wayne Neal, faced a more complex legal journey.
