In a tragic turn of events, Elizabeth Ann Sturgill, an 81-year-old Caucasian female, died on Sunday, April 10, 2022, in Norton, Virginia. A beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was known for her dedication to her family. Her life was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the life of her daughter.
The circumstances of her death unfolded at the hands of her son-in-law, 53-year-old Bryan Wampler.
Wampler fatally shot his wife, 59-year-old Vivian Wampler, and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Sturgill, before taking his own life. The Virginia State Police and the Norton Police Department investigated the incident and concluded that the deaths were the result of a double murder-suicide.
Further investigation into the background of the perpetrator revealed a history of domestic violence. Bryan Wampler had previous arrests and charges related to assault and battery against his wife, Vivian. In February 2019, he was arrested for holding a gun to his wife's head, which led to charges of assault and battery and multiple violations of a protective order. Despite these legal interventions, the domestic violence continued, tragically culminating in the events of April 10, 2022. Police had been called to the Wampler residence on multiple occasions for domestic-related issues in the years leading up to the murder-suicide. As the sole suspect, Bryan Wampler, died by suicide, there were no arrests or trials in this case.
