In the fall of 2022, Cion Jere` Carroll, a 17-year-old Black male, had recently moved from Henrico County to the small town of Kenbridge in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His mother had sent him to live with his grandmother, hoping the quieter, rural setting would offer a safer environment. On the night of November 2, 2022, following a minor disagreement with his grandmother, Cion stepped outside her home and was never seen alive again.
The next day, after he failed to return and was uncharacteristically unresponsive to calls, his family reported him missing to the Kenbridge Police Department.
The family’s concern quickly grew to panic. A crucial clue emerged when Cion's cell phone last pinged at or near the residence of a registered sex offender in Kenbridge. Despite the family's pleas to investigate the location, authorities reportedly did not search the home, citing a lack of probable cause. Frustrated by what they felt was a lack of urgency from law enforcement, Cion's family began their own desperate search, distributing flyers and trying to raise awareness about his disappearance. Their efforts, however, would end in heartbreak.
On November 11, 2022, eight days after he was reported missing, human remains were discovered buried in a shallow grave in a wooded area in Lunenburg County, just outside the Kenbridge town limits. The remains were soon positively identified as those of Cion Jere` Carroll. The Virginia State Police took the lead in what was now a homicide investigation. The details that emerged from the medical examiner's office were horrifying: Cion had been shot twice, once in the head and once in the spine. His body was then dismembered, and lye and cement were poured over his remains before they were buried.
The gruesome nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the small community and left Cion's family devastated and desperate for answers. As of late 2023, the investigation into the murder of Cion Jere` Carroll remains active and ongoing. Virginia State Police have continued to ask for the public's help, stating that they believe people within the Kenbridge and Lunenburg communities have valuable information. To date, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case, leaving a family to mourn and a community to wonder who is responsible for such a brutal act.
