On November 9, 1971, John List, a seemingly devout Lutheran and Sunday school teacher, systematically shot and killed his mother, his wife Helen, and their three children, Patricia, Frederick, and John Jr.
The crime was born out of a desperate attempt to shield his family from the shame of his mounting financial failures and his perception that they were straying from their religious faith. Believing he was sending their souls to heaven, List carried out the executions with cold precision. After the murders, he carefully arranged the bodies of his wife and children in sleeping bags in the mansion's ballroom. In 1989, his story was featured on the television show 'America's Most Wanted.' A viewer recognized the age-progressed bust of List and alerted authorities. He was arrested in Virginia, where he had been living under an alias. Extradited to New Jersey, he was tried and convicted of five counts of first-degree murder in 1990 and sentenced to five consecutive life terms in prison.
