On April 20, 1995, Investigator John D. 'Jack' McLaughlin, a 38-year-old male, was shot and killed in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. A former member of the U.S. Air Force Security Police, he had been with the Camden County Prosecutor's Office for only two months, assigned to investigate cases of child abuse.
On that fateful day, Investigator McLaughlin, along with other officers, went to a home on Sylvan Drive to serve a search warrant in connection with a child abuse investigation. The target of the warrant was a 38-year-old individual who was suspected of molesting their niece. Upon the officers' entry into the house, the suspect opened fire. Investigator McLaughlin was fatally wounded, and another officer, Detective Richard Norcross, was shot multiple times but survived his injuries.
The sound of gunfire prompted a response from other officers, including Patrolman John Norcross, Richard's brother.
Tragically, John Norcross was also shot and killed by the suspect, who was firing from the house. The standoff continued for 14 hours, with more shots being fired and tear gas deployed, before the suspect finally surrendered.
The suspect was arrested and subsequently found guilty of the murders of both Investigator McLaughlin and Patrolman Norcross. Following a series of trials and appeals that saw a death sentence overturned, the suspect was ultimately sentenced to life in prison. She will not be eligible for parole until 2048. Investigator McLaughlin was survived by his wife and two daughters. The community of Haddon Heights was deeply affected by the violent events of that day, a day that is remembered for its horror and the heroism of the fallen officers.
