On a warm August evening in 2011, Nazish Noorani, a 27-year-old Pakistani-American mother of two, was walking down a quiet street in Boonton, New Jersey, with her husband, Kashif Parvaiz, and their three-year-old son. Suddenly, the tranquil scene was shattered by gunfire. Noorani was struck multiple times in the chest and died at the scene, while her husband sustained wounds to his shoulder and foot. Their young child was unharmed.
Initially, Parvaiz told investigators a harrowing tale of a targeted attack. He claimed they were set upon by a group of men who shouted anti-Muslim slurs before opening fire, suggesting the motive was a hate crime. However, inconsistencies in his story quickly aroused the suspicion of law enforcement. Within hours, the investigation began to pivot towards a far more sinister plot, meticulously orchestrated by Parvaiz himself.
The truth that unraveled was a story of betrayal and a deadly love affair.
Investigators discovered that Parvaiz, then 26 years old, was involved with another woman, 26-year-old Antoinette Stephen from Massachusetts. A series of incriminating text messages between the lovers revealed their conspiracy to murder Noorani. One message from Stephen to Parvaiz read, 'You hang in there. Freedom is just around ur corner.' Months before her death, Noorani had grown suspicious of her husband's infidelity and had even sent a chilling text to her brother stating, 'Someday u will find me dead but its cuz of kashi … He wants to kill me.'
The investigation revealed that Parvaiz had enlisted Stephen to carry out the murder. On the night of August 16, 2011, Stephen traveled to Boonton and ambushed the couple as they walked. She fatally shot Noorani and then, as part of their pre-arranged plan, shot Parvaiz to lend credibility to his fabricated story of a random, racially motivated attack. The alleged murder weapon was later found inside Parvaiz's SUV.
Both Kashif Parvaiz and Antoinette Stephen were arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy, and weapons offenses. Parvaiz was also charged with child endangerment. In May 2013, Antoinette Stephen pleaded guilty to murder, conspiracy, and weapons offenses and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution and testify against her former lover. She was later sentenced to 30 years in prison. In February 2015, a jury found Kashif Parvaiz guilty on multiple counts, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
