In an act of selfless courage, 48-year-old John Carey, a male resident of Audubon, New Jersey, lost his life on March 4, 2014. Carey was fatally shot when he stepped in to protect a woman and her young child from a violent domestic assault. The incident unfolded in a converted boarding house on the 500 block of the White Horse Pike, where Carey resided.
The tragic evening began with a heated dispute between Brandon Mosby and his ex-girlfriend. The altercation escalated and moved from a private room into a common area of the residence. It was there that Carey witnessed the assault and chose to intervene, attempting to shield the woman and her toddler from harm. In response to Carey's heroic intervention, Mosby produced a handgun and shot him once in the torso before fleeing the scene. John Carey succumbed to his injuries at the home.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement launched a search for Brandon Mosby. He was apprehended on March 14, 2014, by the U.S.
Marshals New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force in Camden. Mosby was subsequently charged with murder and various weapons offenses.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence demonstrating that Mosby killed Carey because he had interfered in the assault on his ex-girlfriend. In October 2017, a jury found Brandon Mosby guilty of first-degree murder, as well as several weapons-related charges. In February 2018, Mosby was sentenced to 58 years in New Jersey state prison for the murder of John Carey. He will be required to serve a minimum of 46 and a half years before becoming eligible for parole. At the sentencing, Carey's family remembered him as a Good Samaritan who made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to help others in a dangerous situation.
