In the quiet borough of Fairview, New Jersey, the life of 50-year-old Jeronimo Lopez, a man of Guatemalan origin, came to a violent and tragic end on the night of May 3, 2014. What began as a clandestine card game in his Walker Street apartment, a means he reportedly used to save money for a return trip to his native country, descended into a scene of chaos and bloodshed. That evening, a group of armed men stormed the gathering, forever altering the lives of those present.
The assailants, later identified as members of local gangs, targeted the apartment with the specific intention of robbery. Inside, approximately a dozen individuals, including Lopez's son, were subjected to a terrifying ordeal. The intruders, brandishing firearms, forced the occupants to the floor, robbing them of cash and jewelry. In the midst of the mayhem, Jeronimo Lopez was taken into his kitchen where he was shot in the abdomen.
He was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, but the severity of his wound proved fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries during surgery.
The subsequent investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and local law enforcement was swift, leading to the apprehension of four suspects within days. Authorities arrested Evens Dumas, 20, Blonson Florestal, 19, and Keshawn Malone, 21, all from Irvington, along with 25-year-old Jose Rivas of West New York. Investigators identified Dumas as the triggerman who fired the fatal shot. Rivas, an alleged member of the MS-13 gang, was believed to have provided the information about the card game to his associates. Malone, Dumas, and Florestal were reportedly members of the Sex Money Murder sect of the Bloods gang, with Malone considered the ringleader.
The four men faced a litany of charges, including murder, armed robbery, and weapons offenses. Prosecutors asserted that the group deliberately targeted the illegal card game, believing the victims would be hesitant to report the crime to the police. The violent intrusion and the cold-blooded killing of Jeronimo Lopez sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the brutal consequences of gang-related criminal enterprises.
