In the quiet borough of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, a shocking act of violence shattered the morning calm on September 3, 2014, resulting in the tragic death of 82-year-old Antoinette Talignani. A longtime resident of the community, she was found deceased in her home in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide. The grim series of events was set in motion by her husband, Angelo Talignani.
On that Wednesday morning, between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., Angelo Talignani went to the nearby home of his brother-in-law, Anthony Gentile Sr.. There, he took two of Gentile's legally owned guns and fatally shot him in his bedroom. After killing his brother-in-law, Angelo returned to his own residence on the same street.
Once back in his house, Angelo Talignani shot his wife, Antoinette, as she lay in her bed. He then used one of the firearms to take his own life. The violence was first discovered by a home health aide who was living with the Talignanis.
Upon hearing the gunshots, she fled the house and alerted the police from a neighbor's home. When police arrived to investigate the initial call, they discovered the bodies of Antoinette and Angelo Talignani. The body of Anthony Gentile was found when officers went to his home to inquire about the guns found at the Talignani residence.
The motive for Angelo Talignani's actions remains unknown, a lingering question for a community left stunned by the violence. Law enforcement officials, including the Bergen County Prosecutor at the time, John L. Molinelli, stated that there was no clear reason for the murder-suicide. Neighbors and investigators mentioned that Angelo Talignani may have had issues with depression. The perpetrator of the homicides was Angelo Talignani, who died by suicide at the scene; therefore, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Antoinette Talignani and Anthony Gentile Sr. The incident was a tragedy that left friends and neighbors grieving the unexpected loss of three elderly residents.
