In December of 1977, the life of 26-year-old Maryann Carr, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. A medical technician and radiologist, Maryann was last seen on December 15th in the parking lot of the Ledgewood Terrace Apartments where she lived. Witnesses reported seeing her speaking with a man later identified as Richard Cottingham, a notorious serial killer who would come to be known as the 'Torso Killer' and the 'Times Square Ripper'. Cottingham, who had previously resided in the same apartment complex, abducted Maryann from the parking lot.
He took her to the Quality Inn in Hasbrouck Heights, where he subjected her to a brutal assault that included beatings, bites, and slashings with a knife before he raped and ultimately strangled her to death. The following morning, on December 16, 1977, her body was discovered in the motel's parking lot.
She was found between a parked van and a chain-link fence, still clad in her white nurse's uniform, though her shoes were missing. An examination of her body revealed the extent of the violence she had endured; she had numerous cuts and bite marks, as well as bruising on her wrists and ankles consistent with the use of handcuffs, and residue from tape on her mouth.
The investigation into Maryann Carr's murder remained unsolved for a period of time. However, a break in the case came in May of 1980 with the arrest of Richard Cottingham at the very same Quality Inn where Maryann's body had been found. He was apprehended after a motel housekeeper heard the screams of another woman he was torturing. This arrest led authorities to connect him to a string of other violent crimes, including the murder of Maryann Carr. Through further investigation, including the discovery of his fingerprint on a pair of handcuffs left at another crime scene in the same motel, police were able to definitively link him to her case.
Richard Cottingham was subsequently tried and, in October of 1982, was convicted of the murder of Maryann Carr. This was one of multiple murder convictions for Cottingham, who was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for his horrific crimes. His reign of terror across New Jersey and New York had a devastating impact on numerous families and communities.
