On a summer afternoon in Orange, New Jersey, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of Berwyn Street. When police arrived at the scene, they found 32-year-old Jamar Hurd of East Orange suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. It was approximately 1:15 p.m. on June 29, 2015, and despite the efforts of first responders, Hurd was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the male's death was swiftly taken over by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office's Major Crimes and Homicide Task Force.
The investigation led to the arrest of 26-year-old Kyle Nelson, a resident of Orange. Nelson was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and hindering apprehension. His bail was set at a stern $1 million, reflecting the gravity of the accusations against him.
Nelson's arrest was part of a broader, more extensive law enforcement initiative. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced that he was one of twelve individuals charged in connection with eight separate homicides that had plagued Newark, Irvington, Orange, and East Orange during the months of June and July of that year. This series of arrests highlighted a significant effort by local and state law enforcement agencies to combat a surge in violent crime in the area.
