In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Plainfield, New Jersey, the life of 19-year-old William Coles was tragically cut short by gunfire. On July 30, 2016, shortly after 1:30 a.m., police responded to reports of shots fired on the 100 block of Plainfield Avenue. Upon arrival, they found Coles suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed the young man to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Despite their efforts, William Coles, a male, was pronounced dead approximately an hour later. The incident marked another life lost to gun violence in the city.
In the wake of the shooting, the Union County Prosecutor's Office announced a joint investigation involving their Homicide Task Force, the Plainfield Police Division, the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit, and the Union County Sheriff's Office Identification Unit. Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward and offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case.
