In the afternoon of January 24, 2017, a sense of unease rippled through a Hoboken, New Jersey community when police responded to a 911 call reporting possible gunshots. Inside an apartment at 300 Marshall Drive, officers discovered 18-year-old Adrian Rivera, a male resident of the home, with a gunshot wound to his torso. Paramedics rushed him to Jersey City Medical Center, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:50 p.m.
The investigation into the
young man's death quickly revealed it was not a random act of violence. Authorities disclosed that the attack was targeted, a suspicion that grew stronger after a search of Rivera's apartment uncovered over three pounds of marijuana and more than $13,000 in cash. Adding a layer of tragedy to the case, it was revealed that Rivera knew his alleged assailants from their shared days in grammar school.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced the first arrests in the case. Khalif Geiger, 20, and an unnamed 17-year-old juvenile, both from Jersey City, were taken into custody. They faced a string of serious charges, including murder, felony murder, armed robbery, armed burglary, and several firearms offenses.
The investigation did not end there. Law enforcement soon identified a third individual believed to be involved in Rivera's death. An arrest warrant was issued for 18-year-old Keyshaun Wiggins of Jersey City, who was considered armed and dangerous. He faced a similar litany of charges as the first two suspects. The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force apprehended Wiggins in Springfield, Massachusetts, on February 17, 2017, bringing all known suspects in the shooting death of Adrian Rivera into custody.
