On a late Sunday evening in Hoboken, New Jersey, the life of 21-year-old Damon Murray was tragically cut short. Just after 11:30 p.m. on April 28, 2024, the sound of gunfire echoed in the area of 320 Marshall Drive. When police arrived, they discovered a crime scene, but the victim was already on his way to the hospital. Murray had been transported by a private vehicle to Jersey City Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead just after midnight on Monday, April 29th.
Damon Murray was a beloved figure in his community, remembered as a standout student leader and a gifted football and basketball player at Hoboken High School, from which he graduated in 2020. He had gone on to play football at Rutgers University but had taken a leave from his studies to return home and support his family. At the time of his death, he was working as a paraprofessional in the Hoboken Public Schools and had dreams of becoming a firefighter. His death marked the first homicide in Hoboken since 2022, sending ripples of grief and shock through the city.
The investigation into Murray's death quickly progressed, leading law enforcement to a suspect. Albert Morales, a 33-year-old man from the neighboring town of North Bergen, was identified as the individual allegedly responsible for the shooting. In a coordinated effort between law enforcement agencies, Morales was located and arrested in Chicopee, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, April 30th. He now faces charges of murder and weapons offenses and is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey to face the justice system. The motive behind the fatal encounter, as suggested by Murray's mother, may have stemmed from a dispute over gambling.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Hoboken community came together to mourn the loss of a young man who was seen as a role model and a source of inspiration. A balloon release ceremony was held in his honor, and many recalled his positive impact and dedication to his family and community. The swift apprehension of a suspect brought a small measure of solace to a city grappling with the senseless loss of one of its own.
