In a tragic turn of events stemming from a long-simmering neighborly dispute, James Bellamy, a 66-year-old man, was shot and killed in his Hackensack, New Jersey, apartment building. The incident, which unfolded on a Sunday morning in June 2017, concluded with the death of his assailant in a murder-suicide, leaving the community in shock.
The conflict between Bellamy and his downstairs neighbor, 63-year-old Arthur Hillman, had been escalating for months.
Hillman had lodged numerous noise complaints with the Hackensack Police Department against Bellamy, who lived in the apartment directly above him at the residential building on Linden Street. Since January of that year, authorities had been called to intervene in their disputes on approximately seven occasions.
On the morning of the fatal encounter, the feud reached its violent climax. Hillman confronted Bellamy in the lobby of their building and shot him multiple times. Responding to a 911 call reporting gunshots at around 9:15 a.m., police discovered Bellamy's body near the elevator. Shortly after, a resident directed officers to the rear parking lot, where they found Hillman in his car. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators found Hillman in possession of a. 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, believed to be the weapon used in both shootings, as well as a loaded. 38-caliber revolver. The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office handled the investigation and confirmed that no other suspects were being sought in what was determined to be a clear case of murder-suicide. The tragic event underscored the devastating potential of unresolved neighborhood conflicts.
