On a Sunday evening in September 2017, a neighborhood cookout at the Brandywood Apartment Complex in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, turned into a scene of violence that would claim the life of 31-year-old Taufeeq Mitchell. The incident, which occurred on September 24th, began as a verbal dispute between two men before escalating into a larger brawl. It was in the midst of this chaos that Matthew Gonzalez, a 29-year-old from Mays Landing, pulled out a gun and began firing into the crowd.
