In the spring of 2018, a life was tragically cut short in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on East St. Georges Avenue in Linden, New Jersey. Brian Pierre, a 27-year-old male from Roselle, was shot multiple times on the evening of Tuesday, April 17th. Despite efforts to save him, Pierre succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a local hospital. The incident cast a somber shadow over the community, prompting a swift and thorough investigation by law enforcement.
The joint investigation, led by the Union County Homicide Task Force and assisted by several local police departments, quickly zeroed in on a suspect. The following morning, authorities apprehended 18-year-old Darwens Cadet of Roselle in connection with the fatal shooting. Cadet was subsequently charged with murder and related weapons offenses.
Within a few months, a grand jury indicted him on these charges, moving the case toward a trial.
In February 2020, a jury found Darwens Cadet guilty of the murder of Brian Pierre, and he was later sentenced to a 40-year prison term. However, the legal saga was far from over. In a significant turn of events, a state appeals court overturned Cadet's conviction in July 2024. The appellate judges cited errors in the police investigation, specifically regarding questions asked of Cadet after he had invoked his right to remain silent. The court also found fault with the trial judge's handling of certain aspects of the case. This decision has resulted in the case being sent back for a new trial, leaving the final chapter in the story of Brian Pierre's death yet to be written.
