On a Sunday evening in Plainfield, New Jersey, 45-year-old Benjamin Nord, a Black/African American male, was shot and killed. The incident occurred on November 11, 2018, outside a small store located on the 400 block of Liberty Street, near West Fifth Street. Plainfield Police Division patrol units responded to a report of a shooting and found Nord suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 p.m. that night.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Plainfield Police Division, and the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit, launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. In an effort to generate leads, the Union County Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and indictment of the individual or individuals responsible for Nord's death. Authorities publicly appealed for assistance, urging anyone with information to contact the Homicide Task Force.
In January 2019, investigators released a video of a suspect in the hope that a member of the public might be able to identify the shooter. Despite these efforts and the active investigation, no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation into the death of Benjamin Nord remains ongoing. His sister, Antonia Nord, described him as a caring and loving person who was always there for his family, acknowledging his past mistakes but emphasizing that he was not a bad person. The family faced difficulties with funeral expenses in the wake of his sudden and violent death.
