Summary based on 3 sources
Moussa Fofana, an 18-year-old male student at Columbia High School, was a promising soccer player with dreams of turning professional. On the evening of June 6, 2021, he was walking with a friend through the Underhill Sports Complex in Maplewood, New Jersey, on their way to another friend's house to watch a boxing match. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., gunshots echoed through the area. When police arrived at the scene, they found Fofana suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:24 p.m. A second male victim, also a student, was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The community was left in shock and mourning for the loss of a beloved young man known for his kindness and dedication to his sport.

The investigation into Fofana's death involved the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the Maplewood Police Department, the Essex County Sheriff's Department, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office. For weeks, the case remained unsolved, causing fear and frustration among Fofana's family and the community, who held rallies and demanded justice. Their calls were partially answered on August 5, 2021, when authorities announced the arrest of 20-year-old Yohan Hernandez of Newark. He was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting.

Yohan Hernandez was taken into custody and the legal proceedings began. It was later revealed that Hernandez claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Fofana had been harassing his younger brother. In September 2022, Hernandez pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon as part of a plea deal. This deal was met with outrage from Fofana's family, who believed the proposed 15-year sentence was not justice for their son's life. Despite their emotional pleas in court, a judge accepted the plea agreement. In November 2022, Yohan Hernandez was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve 85 percent of the term before being eligible for parole and will likely face deportation upon his release as he is not a U.S. citizen.
