In the late hours of a January night, what began as a drive home from work for Louis E. Ciccanti Jr. ended in a fatal encounter on Interstate 76. On January 24, 2022, the 51-year-old male was discovered deceased in his black 2004 Mercedes Benz 500 in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey. Initially, it appeared to be a single-car accident, with his vehicle having struck a traffic barrier. However, the investigation by New Jersey State Police soon revealed a more sinister cause of death: a fatal gunshot wound that he sustained before the crash.
Investigators have pieced together a timeline of events that suggest a road-rage incident that escalated with deadly consequences. The altercation is believed to have started in Philadelphia, on the Schuylkill Expressway near Passyunk Avenue. Surveillance footage captured both Ciccanti's Mercedes and a black sedan, believed to be the suspect's vehicle, traveling east and crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge into South Jersey.
It was after this crossing that the fatal shot was fired, leading to Ciccanti's death as he was driving home to Cherry Hill from his job as a rail vehicle electronic equipment maintainer for SEPTA.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement has actively sought public assistance in identifying the individual or individuals responsible. New Jersey State Police have released images and surveillance video of the suspect's black sedan in the hopes of generating leads. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide.
