In the quiet early morning hours of July 10, 2022, a violent encounter in a Millstone, New Jersey home shattered the neighborhood's tranquility. Gerard 'Jerry' Carpinello Jr., a 49-year-old male from Portland, Pennsylvania, was visiting the Woodville Road residence of an acquaintance, 71-year-old David A. Bulk. What began as a social visit between the two men took a tragic turn when Bulk allegedly shot Carpinello multiple times. Responding to a report of shots fired at approximately 3:15 a.m., New Jersey State Police troopers discovered Carpinello with severe gunshot injuries.
Emergency services transported Carpinello to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune City, where he fought for his life for nearly three weeks. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries on July 29, 2022.
The incident left a community in shock and a family mourning the loss of a man remembered for his kind and positive nature.
At the scene of the shooting, authorities found David A. Bulk and took him into custody. He was initially charged with attempted murder. Following Carpinello's death, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office upgraded the charges against Bulk to first-degree murder and a second-degree weapons offense. After his initial arrest, Bulk was released from custody, a decision the state had argued against. He was subsequently re-arrested on the murder charge at his home without incident by members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau, the New Jersey State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The case remains under investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
