Quadree Burch, a 27-year-old Black man from Newark, New Jersey, was remembered by those who loved him as a caring, quiet, and loving person, and "the best brother ever." His family’s world was turned upside down in the late summer of 2022 when they reported him missing on August 9 from South 11th Street in Newark. Known to friends as Pee or P90, Burch was last seen wearing a red shirt and black jeans.
The anxious search for Burch came to a tragic end nine days later. On the afternoon of August 18, 2022, a New Jersey Department of Transportation employee cutting grass along the shoulder of Interstate 80 in Allamuchy Township discovered human remains near a wooded area at milepost 16.6. Detectives from the New Jersey State Police soon identified the victim as Quadree Burch.
A five-month investigation pieced together the final hours of Burch's life. Authorities determined that the homicide had occurred on August 7, two days before his family reported him missing.
Investigators concluded that Burch had been targeted, kidnapped in Newark, and driven to the remote location in Warren County. There, on the side of the interstate, he was shot and killed.
By January 2023, the investigation had led to three suspects, all from Newark: Mustafa Manns, then 28, William Dixon, 34, and Nishir Rios-Figueroa, 30. Dixon was already in the Essex County Jail, having been incarcerated since August 2022 for allegedly threatening two of Burch’s associates. Rios-Figueroa was in custody in Westchester County, New York, on unrelated auto theft charges and was extradited to New Jersey. State Police arrested Manns at a residence in Newark on January 19, 2023.
The three men were charged with a raft of offenses, including murder, felony murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, robbery, and weapons offenses. The case reached its legal conclusion in June 2026, when all three men pleaded guilty for their roles in the kidnapping and killing of Quadree Burch. Following their pleas, they were sentenced to significant prison time.
