On the morning of September 2, 2015, a young father, Dakota Rico, was found deceased in Saginaw, Michigan. The 21-year-old male had been shot multiple times while driving his uncle's pickup truck in the area of Douglass and Youmans streets around 12:30 a.m.. Authorities who responded to a report of shots fired discovered Rico slumped over the steering wheel of the vehicle. His family described the incident as an ambush, with his mother stating her belief that his friends had set him up. At the time of his death, Rico had a newborn daughter who was just a few months old.
For years, the investigation into Dakota Rico's murder yielded no arrests, leaving his family searching for answers and holding vigils in his memory.. The case grew cold, though his mother mentioned that authorities had an idea of who was responsible but lacked sufficient evidence to proceed. The family's hope for justice seemed to wane as time passed without any significant developments in the case. In January 2022, the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office announced charges against Marcos Torres, then 25 years old. Torres was charged with one count of open murder, a single count of possessing a firearm as a felon, and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting death of Dakota Rico. This development offered a glimmer of hope to Rico's family that they might finally see justice served for his death.
