In the early hours of October 2, 2015, the life of 20-year-old Maurice Anthony-Charles Kirkwood Jr. was cut short in a fatal shooting in southeast Lansing, Michigan. The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Trappers Cove Trail, within the Trappers Cove apartment complex. Kirkwood, a resident of Haslett, was a male who became embroiled in an altercation that tragically escalated to gunfire.
The dispute, which reportedly stemmed from a prior disagreement between Kirkwood and another individual, spilled out into the street. During the confrontation, shots were fired from a vehicle, striking Kirkwood. He was later pronounced dead from his injuries. Another person involved in the altercation also sustained injuries but survived. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a white SUV possibly connected to the shooting.
In the aftermath of the deadly encounter, a multi-agency investigation was launched, involving the Lansing Police Department, Michigan State University Police, Michigan State Police, and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. Their collaborative efforts led them to a suspect, 24-year-old Kimario Deondrae Rowland-Taylor of Ypsilanti. A vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses was stopped by police, and Rowland-Taylor was subsequently taken into custody in Ypsilanti.
Investigators worked diligently to piece together the events of that night, recovering handgun bullet shell casings from the scene, although the murder weapon itself was not found. Following the investigation, the case was presented to prosecutors, and Kimario Deondrae Rowland-Taylor was charged with the murder of Maurice Kirkwood. The charges brought against Rowland-Taylor set the stage for legal proceedings to seek justice for Kirkwood's untimely death.
