In a tragic turn of events at a Days Inn Hotel in Madison Heights, Michigan, a young man lost his life. Adrian Anthony Green Jr., a 20-year-old male from Southfield, was in a hotel room with several other people when a handgun was being handled recklessly. This carelessness led to a fatal outcome on Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
The group in the hotel room were all acquainted with each other and frequently stayed at hotels in the area. In the course of the reckless handling of the firearm, it was pointed at Adrian Green Jr. and discharged, striking him. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Green was transported by the fire department to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to the gunshot wound the following day.
Madison Heights Police Department officers responded to the incident and, after an investigation at the scene, arrested 17-year-old Christian Washington of Hamtramck. The weapon used in the shooting was also recovered at the hotel. Following the investigation, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office brought two felony charges against Washington: manslaughter - death by weapon aimed with intent but without malice, and felony firearm. These charges carried a combined potential sentence of up to 17 years in prison. Washington was subsequently arraigned, and a bond was set at $1 million.
