18-year-old daughter, and her husband, David Somers, also 51, were driving in their Chevrolet Equinox. An argument between the couple, reportedly stemming from accusations of infidelity, escalated as they traveled. This led to David Somers pulling the vehicle over to the side of the highway. He then retrieved a shotgun from the rear of the car.
What happened next was a swift and brutal sequence of events. David Somers first shot his stepdaughter, who was in the vehicle. Despite being critically injured, the young woman survived. He then turned the weapon on his wife, Lisa, fatally shooting her. After killing his wife, David Somers took his own life with the same shotgun.
When Ionia County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau. The bodies of Lisa and David Somers were found outside the vehicle. Inside the SUV, they found Lisa's daughter, suffering from a serious gunshot wound. She was transported to a nearby hospital and was initially listed in critical condition. Her survival was crucial for investigators to piece together the timeline of the murder-suicide. As the case was determined to be a murder-suicide, with the perpetrator deceased, no arrests were made.
