Wendy Brodick, a 55-year-old female, was a renowned artist and animal rescue advocate living in Otter Lake, Michigan. Her life was tragically cut short on March 30, 2018, in a double homicide that also claimed the life of her 45-year-old stepson, Peter Brodick Jr. The events leading to their deaths began to unfold over a dispute with a tenant who had fallen behind on rent for a lake property owned by the Brodicks.
Wendy had been in the process of evicting the tenant, 36-year-old Adam Balcer, who reportedly owed $1,800 in back rent. This led to a heated exchange earlier in the week. The conflict escalated tragically when the suspect allegedly went to one of the Brodick's homes armed with a gun. Both Wendy and Peter Jr. were fatally shot. The victims' bodies were discovered in separate locations, adding to the distressing nature of the crime. Peter Brodick Jr.'s body was found inside a home in Watertown Township on a Friday, while his stepmother's body was discovered two days later near an unused farm silo in Millington Township.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Adam Balcer, who was subsequently arrested. He was arraigned on 17 counts, including two charges of murder, possession of a weapon by a felon, tampering with evidence, and unlawful imprisonment. At the time of the incident, Balcer was listed as a parole absconder and had a prior conviction for larceny in a building. He was held in the Tuscola County Jail on a $2 million bond.
