In the small community of Linden, Michigan, a night of camaraderie turned into a tragedy that ended the life of 28-year-old Christopher Michael Scott Baldwin on September 22, 2018. The incident unfolded in an apartment located on Seymour Road in Argentine Township, where Baldwin was with his friend, Floyd Bryon Blalock Jr., who was 22 at the time. The two friends had a history of playfully handling firearms, often unloading a weapon and pulling the trigger in jest. On this particular evening, their game took a fatal turn.
According to witness accounts, Blalock was handling a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Believing the weapon to be unloaded after removing the magazine, he pointed it at Baldwin and pulled the trigger. Tragically, a single bullet remained in the chamber. The shot struck Baldwin in the chest, inflicting a mortal wound. When law enforcement arrived at the apartment following a call about the shooting, they found Christopher Baldwin deceased at the scene. The incident sent shockwaves through their circle of friends and the wider community, highlighting the devastating consequences of mishandling firearms.
In the wake of the shooting, Floyd Bryon Blalock Jr. was taken into custody and initially charged with second-degree murder for the death of his friend. As the legal process moved forward, the charge was later amended to manslaughter. Blalock ultimately entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter, as well as a felony firearm count. In March of 2019, a Genesee County Circuit Court judge sentenced Blalock to a prison term of 6 to 15 years for his role in the unintentional, yet fatal, shooting of Christopher Baldwin.
