In a quiet neighborhood in Fenton Township, Michigan, the life of Orhan Hosic, a 38-year-old man of Bosnian descent, was brought to a sudden and violent end on July 6, 2024. A man described as a 'loner' who ran a business from his home, Hosic was found shot to death in his apartment near Thompson and Jennings roads.
Initially, the investigation into his murder seemed to stall, leaving the community on edge. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson publicly stated that the killing was not a random act but a deliberate one, though leads were scarce. Investigators had little physical evidence to go on, with no surveillance footage available in the area. An early lead regarding an orange Chevy Camero seen in the vicinity was a key piece of the puzzle.
The case took a significant turn with the arrest of 29-year-old Omar Brogdon of Detroit. The investigation revealed that Hosic had been selling a pair of Corvette seats on Facebook Marketplace and had been in communication with Brogdon for about 36 hours leading up to the fatal encounter. It is believed that Brogdon went to Hosic's home to purchase the seats, but the meeting escalated into a deadly confrontation. Authorities stated that an argument, which began over which sports car brand was superior, turned violent. Hosic was unarmed when he was shot.
In a strategic move to mislead the suspect, who investigators believed was closely following media coverage of the case, Sheriff Swanson employed a 'red herring' tactic during a press conference. He publicly expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the investigation to give the suspect a false sense of security. This tactic proved successful, as Brogdon, who was indeed monitoring the news, was later apprehended on July 23rd at a residence in metro Detroit.
Evidence connecting Brogdon to the crime included the stolen Corvette seats found inside his orange Camaro, which witnesses had reported seeing in the area of the homicide. Investigators also recovered text messages from Brogdon to his girlfriend that reportedly discussed the killing. Multiple firearms were seized, one of which is believed to be the murder weapon. Brogdon has since been charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and felony firearm. He is being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail. His case was bound over to circuit court for trial following a preliminary examination in October 2024.
