In the spring of 2019, the life of 20-year-old Leea Jamerson of Saginaw, Michigan, was tragically cut short. A vibrant young woman, she was known for her bright smile and engaging personality. Having recently completed her certification as a nursing assistant, she was embarking on a promising future. However, on the night of April 28th, or early the next morning on April 29th, a gathering at a house party in Saginaw County turned deadly. In a sudden act of violence, Jamerson was shot and killed, leaving her family and community in profound grief.
The investigation into Jamerson's death quickly identified a suspect, Shaquille Harris. In the weeks that followed the shooting, law enforcement tracked Harris to Texas, where he was apprehended and taken into custody. His arrest, however, marked the beginning of a long and arduous journey for Jamerson's family as they sought justice for their loved one. The legal proceedings were significantly delayed, in part due to the global coronavirus pandemic which put a hold on many jury trials. This extended period of waiting added to the family's anguish as they navigated a justice system grappling with unprecedented challenges.
Ultimately, Shaquille Harris was held accountable for his role in Leea Jamerson's death. In a resolution to the criminal case, Harris entered a plea of guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and a felony firearm offense. On September 27, 2021, a judge sentenced him for his crimes. The sentence included a term of five years for the firearm charge, and a subsequent sentence of eight to thirty years for involuntary manslaughter. While the conclusion of the legal proceedings brought a measure of closure, it could never erase the profound loss felt by those who knew and loved Leea Jamerson.
