In the summer of 2019, the life of 60-year-old Carol Baur, a female resident of Saint Clair Shores, Michigan, was tragically cut short in a violent series of events that began over a Fourth of July dispute. Baur was allowing a longtime acquaintance, Tom Ihlenfeldt, to live in her home to share expenses. Her family would later reveal they believed he was manipulating her and had threatened to harm her family if she asked him to leave.
On the evening of July 4th, Ihlenfeldt became agitated with neighbors who were celebrating the holiday with sparklers. He began firing a weapon at the crowd, which included children. In a heroic act, Carol Baur intervened, trying to get Ihlenfeldt to stop by bringing him back inside her home. It was a decision that her family believes cost her her life, as she was trying to protect others from his rampage. Once inside, Ihlenfeldt shot Baur multiple times.
What followed was a tense standoff with law enforcement that lasted for approximately 30 hours. During this time, Ihlenfeldt fired multiple rounds at police officers with a high-powered rifle and even shot at a police robot that was sent into the residence. The standoff concluded when authorities discovered that Ihlenfeldt had taken his own life. Inside the home, they also found Carol Baur deceased from the gunshot wounds she had sustained. In the aftermath, there were no arrests to be made in connection with Carol Baur's death, as the sole suspect, Tom Ihlenfeldt, was also deceased. Her family, while grieving her loss, expressed their immense pride in her selfless actions, remembering her as a hero who sacrificed herself to save others.
