In October of 2022, the life of 17-year-old Taya Land, a female and a young mother, was tragically cut short. Her body was discovered on the side of I-94 near 8 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. She had been shot in the head three times. The grim discovery launched an investigation that would soon lead authorities to a suspect.
Investigators utilized cell phone data and GPS records which pointed them to 20-year-old Nathaniel Taylor of Southfield.
The data showed that Taylor and Land, who had reportedly met on an app, were together on the morning of her death. It is believed that an argument broke out between the two, leading Taylor to push Land out of his vehicle onto the freeway where he then shot her. Authorities found that his GPS data showed his vehicle was stopped on the freeway for approximately four minutes. Upon searching Taylor's home, pieces of the 9mm handgun used in the murder were discovered.
Within a week of Taya Land's death, Nathaniel Taylor was arrested and charged with her murder. He was arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm. In April 2024, Taylor pleaded no contest to the charges. Subsequently, in May 2024, he was sentenced to 17 to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder, with an additional two years for the felony firearm conviction.
