In the early hours of July 6, 2019, the life of 31-year-old Brian Anderson, a Black male from Detroit, Michigan, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting on a ramp of I-94. Anderson and another man, Malcolm Drake, had connected with 26-year-old Demetris Nelson through the social networking app Grindr. The encounter, however, took a violent turn when Nelson attempted to rob them.
The situation escalated quickly, culminating in Nelson opening fire on Anderson and Drake. When police responded to a call, they discovered a vehicle that had crashed on the side of the highway ramp. Inside, they found Anderson, who had been driving, deceased from a gunshot wound. Drake, the passenger, was critically injured but survived the attack. The investigation that followed pointed to Nelson as the perpetrator, suggesting that he had used the dating app to specifically target and rob gay men.
Within two days of the incident, on July 8, 2019, Detroit Police arrested Demetris Nelson in connection with the shooting. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged him with a string of serious felonies, including first-degree murder, felony murder, assault with intent to murder, and assault with intent to rob while armed, in addition to four felony firearm counts. The case garnered significant attention from the community and advocacy groups due to the violent nature of the crime and the allegation that the victims were targeted because of their sexual orientation.
The prosecution of Demetris Nelson involved the Fair Michigan Justice Project, an organization that works with law enforcement to solve serious crimes against members of the LGBTQ community. Nelson was arraigned on July 12, 2019, where the charges against him were formally presented. Prosecutors stated that Nelson had confessed to the crimes and had a history of using dating apps to find and rob his victims, indicating a premeditated and calculated approach to his actions. The case highlighted the dangers that can be present when using social media and dating apps and underscored the ongoing issue of violence targeting the LGBTQ community.
