In the quiet community of Lapeer, Michigan, Kaden James Ryan Stheiner was an 18-year-old, White/Caucasian male with a promising future. A senior at Lapeer High School, he was eagerly anticipating his graduation in the spring of 2021. Kaden had a passion for working on cars, a trade he was learning at the Lapeer County Education and Technology Center's auto body program and shared with his father.
Known for his love of shoes, video games, and Nike apparel, he had a knack for making those around him happy. His life, however, was tragically cut short on February 2, 2021.
On that fateful night, at a mobile home park in Metamora Township, Kaden sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his torso. Officers from the Metamora Township Police Department arrived at the scene and performed lifesaving measures before he was transported to Lapeer McLaren Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The initial report of an accidental shooting quickly turned into a homicide investigation. The news of his sudden death sent shockwaves through the Lapeer community, particularly at his high school, where counselors and social workers were brought in to support grieving students and staff.
The investigation into Kaden's death, led by the Metamora Township Police Department with assistance from the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division, swiftly led to an arrest. A 19-year-old Metamora Township man, Dillon Daniel Downey, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. The Lapeer County Prosecutor's Office charged Downey with homicide-manslaughter without malice. Following the incident, more than 100 people gathered at Rowden Park, holding purple and black balloons to remember the young man whose life was so abruptly ended.
