On a tragic afternoon in Lansing, Michigan, the lives of 24-year-old Alexis Lynette Brown and her 46-year-old mother, Michelle Marie Roper, were cut short by an act of gun violence. The double homicide, which occurred on September 16, 2021, sent shockwaves through their community and set off a months-long search for the man responsible.
The incident unfolded when Brion Reynolds arrived at Brown's residence, ostensibly to pick up the two children he shared with her. He was driven to the home by Gavin Anspech. Witnesses reported that after Brown brought car seats out to the vehicle, Reynolds, armed with a rifle he had placed in the truck, opened fire. Brown was struck and ran back into the house, screaming that she had been shot. Reynolds pursued her inside and continued shooting, killing both Brown and her mother, Michelle Roper. A six-year-old boy was also injured during the attack but survived.
Immediately following the shooting, Reynolds fled the scene with his and Brown's two young daughters, prompting an Amber Alert. The children were later found safe, having been dropped off with Reynolds' sister, Monea Reynolds. This set off a four-month manhunt for Brion Reynolds, which concluded when he turned himself in to the Lansing police in January 2022.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Brion Reynolds faced multiple charges, including two counts of murder. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to a term of 60 to 80 years in prison. Before his sentencing, Reynolds expressed his wish to take back the events of that day and apologized for his actions.
Two other individuals were charged in connection with the double homicide. Monea Reynolds, Brion's sister, was charged as an accessory after the fact for lying to the police. She was sentenced to two years of probation and 90 days in jail. Gavin Anspech, who drove Brion Reynolds to the scene, was also charged with being an accessory after the fact to a felony.
