On December 1, 2021, he was discovered deceased in his car at the York Creek Apartments. The initial call to authorities was for a man thought to be sleeping in his vehicle, but the reality was far more grim. An autopsy would later confirm that Michael Wright had been shot.
The investigation into his death quickly moved forward, and within days, a suspect was in custody. Marquis Thomas, a 33-year-old man from the nearby city of Kentwood, was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend. Investigators uncovered that Wright and Thomas, who were described as being good friends, were allegedly involved in drug dealing together. On the day of the fatal shooting, the two men had been together in the car where Wright's body was later found.
