On March 30, 2022, 61-year-old Lela Louella Mae Lang-Dow was found dead in her home on Forest Street in River Rouge, Michigan. A concerned employer had requested a welfare check when Lela, a dedicated employee at an assisted living facility in Wyandotte, failed to show up for her shift. Responding officers discovered her inside the residence, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly focused on her 19-year-old grandson, Jordan Dow, who resided with her.
He was present at the house when the police arrived and was known to be the last person to have seen her alive. Family members described the relationship between Lela and her grandson as good, stating she had been caring for him since he was a young boy, and there were no apparent signs of conflict that would suggest such a violent outcome.
Despite the family's perception of their relationship, Jordan Dow was taken in for questioning and subsequently arrested. At the time of the incident, he was already on a court-ordered tether for a prior criminal sexual conduct charge involving minors. The motive for the shooting remained unclear throughout the investigation.
Jordan Dow was charged with felony murder, second-degree murder, and two counts of felony firearm. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide and felony firearm charges. The tragic event left the community and Lela's family grappling with the profound loss of a beloved grandmother at the hands of her own grandson.
