In the early evening of December 29, 2022, the life of 32-year-old Jeremy Lampeart, a White/Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in the parking lot of the Country Hearth Inn and Suites in Sturgis, Michigan. Lampeart was discovered with a gunshot wound and rushed to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A resident of Sturgis since 1995, he was known for his love of the outdoors, woodworking, and video games.
He had been employed by both International Paper and Morgan Olson in Sturgis.
The Sturgis Department of Public Safety immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Security camera footage from the motel captured the incident, which aided investigators in identifying a person of interest. Authorities assured the public that they believed it to be an isolated event and that there was no further danger to the community. The investigation was a collaborative effort, with the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police providing assistance at the scene.
The investigation led to the identification of Cameron Stephen Hope, a 32-year-old man from Gary, Indiana, as the primary suspect. On February 14, 2023, Hope was apprehended in his hometown by the Indiana State Police. He was subsequently charged with open murder, using a firearm during a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. It was reported that neither Lampeart nor Hope were registered guests at the motel, but both had friends staying there, and a group had gathered to use drugs behind the establishment.
In August 2024, Cameron Hope entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to the lesser charges of manslaughter and felon in possession of a firearm. Following his plea, he was sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison for his role in Jeremy Lampeart's death. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent incident. Jeremy Lampeart is survived by his daughter, parents, and siblings.
